Gangadikal Trek — Where the Western Ghats Still Feel Untouched

If you’ve done Kudremukh and want something quieter — something that still makes your jaw drop but doesn’t feel like a weekend queue — then Gangadikal is your answer.

Gangadikal Peak in Chikmagalur, Karnataka is situated within the Kudremukh National Park and is one of the lesser known treks in the entire Western Ghats at an altitude of 4,806 ft. No crowds on the 'gram. No racket. There's just you, the shola forests, the rolling grasslands and a ridge walk that really does feel like the edge of the world.

The trail starts from the village of Mullodi and is around 7 km each way. Moderate difficulty. Beginners in decent shape are fine. Experienced trekkers love the raw, unscripted nature of the path. You will traverse patches of dense forest, small streams and open meadows

The silence is what makes Gangadikal unique. It’s not a famous trek yet. Only recently has the forest department opened it for trekking and permits are still required, which keeps the numbers low and the experience real. Lucky trekkers spot gaur, deer, Malabar giant squirrels and rare birds like the Malabar Trogon on the way.

Gangadikal comes alive in the Monsoon. The whole ridge turns electric green, clouds whip by at eye level, the shola grasslands look like something from a nature documentary. It’s one of those treks where the weather isn’t an issue – that’s the whole point.

If you're looking for a trek that still feels like a discovery — Gangadikal is it.
